FOCUS ON

Strange Foods in Sardinia
We are all a little cautious of other cuisines when we travel at times. It smells, looks and tastes very different sometimes. But there are definitely elements of Sardinian cuisine that seem purely designed to shock foreigners. The famous casu marzu or "walking cheese" is basically a fresh pecorino left out covered with cheesecloth so flies will lay their eggs in it. When the maggots hatch they spread it on bread and eat it, including the live maggots! However tordi is probably even stranger. Tordi are small , four-inch-long songbirds that feed on myrtle berries. They are netted and poached and served cold garnished with myrtle leaves. You are supposed to eat them whole, including everything but the beak. They look a little spindly but the meat is supposedly gamey but flavourful. Despite the unusual cuisine Sardinia is a fantastic place to visit with ancient ruins, wildlife including flamingo's and rare seals, beautiful seaside caves, wonderful mountain paths and quaint towns.
