your tales : WEEK END IN ITALY - CINQUE TERRE

I went to Italy for a weekend to Pisa and La Spezia. It was great to get away from the colder weather and go around in light clothing for a change. I arrived there at 9pm, and shared a taxi to the railway station only about 2kms and thought that this would be very close to the hotel I had decided to stay at - a cheapie in the Rough Guide. The hotel actually turned out to be a 25 minute walk away from there and I got lost going there! So it was about 10pm before I found it - just around the corner from the Leaning Tower, which was beautifully lit up white. I went back into the town to investigate it with unladen shoulders and when I finally decided ona restaurant, I was told they had stopped making pizza, so I had to wait until the next day to have some pizza in Pisa. It was very nice Saturday. I walked around Pisa until 15:30 when my friends arrived. I had been there before but had only seen the Leaning Tower and Duomo (cathedral), which is all in the same place, but this time I had enough time to see the whole town. Very nice town. I really loved it. The temperature was about 23C max and sunny and JUST PERFECT.

From Pisa we drove up to La Spezia. This is a naval port. Not so beautiful, even though it is surrounded by mountains, but the nearby coastline (15km away) is stunning. We stayed in a flash hotel (4 stars) at Porto Venere, very nice. On Sunday we went a little way further north to the Cinque Terre and did a three hour walk from Manarola to Corniglia to Vernazza. Quite hilly and with spectacular views of cliffs and seafront. Temp was cooler around 18C most of the time but the sun finally came out as we were sitting in the square on the waterfront at Vernazza having a beer and a piece of pizza. Heaven! In the evening we went to dinner at a relations house. They live on a small farm and we drank some of their home made (and home grown) vino bianco, grappa and spumante plus had a lovely meal. I felt so lucky to have such an opportunity. Stayed at La Spezia opposte the station as I had to catch the 0710 express to Pisa in the morning for my flight back to London. (John, Australia).
