La Primula Menaggio, Lago di Como
If you want to visit Lago di Como try the hostel in Menaggio. Wonderful atmosphere, very good breakfast, located in a place with a beautiful view of the lake and the mountains. The crew gives you tons of information like hiking maps etc. It's right above a ferry point and bus station. The guy who runs the place also cooks dinner but they are kind of expensive. The hostel however is 13.5 euro including the great breakfast, which is really cheap. You can hike from there to a spot where you see Switzerland by the way. Go! The hostel is called La Primula (call and reserve) it's a great place to rest and meet people and talk and hike and eat.

Ostello Archi Rossi Florence
Very close to train station, enjoy the perfect atmosphere there, ignore the staff! Better chance to book in by 10am arrival.

Pop Inn Rome
Living up to its hype and them some the glorious Pop Inn is a joy that anyone wanting to experience Rome on a backpacker's budget should try. Situated 2 minutes (yes, really) from Rome's main Termini train station the hostel has no lock-out or curfew and has a large common room with comfy chairs and tables for knackered wanderers to rest and drink a beer or three. Every night they show a DVD on the huge plasma screen TV (when I was there it was K-Paxx and Gladiator). Dorms are mixed (there is an 'under 35' rule here, although not in the dearer private rooms) and prices start at 16 Euros per night. Beds are comfortable with linen provided and you can tell how much attention to detail they’ve taken when you first spot the framed X-Men & Batman posters on the dorm walls). You may use any bathroom in the hotel and hot water is free and on demand. Lockers are also provided (bring your own lock) and there is free Internet access from around 8am- 10pm via 2 pcs in the common room. The staff are friendly and a good laugh and unlike some hostels I've stayed in where the attitude seems to be 'beds, bog and belligerence' the creators of Pop Inn have taken a great deal of effort to make everyone feel welcome and make the whole experience similar to a students’ union. You can also sleep in as late as you like (handy if you’ve been drinking till 5am) and return at any hour without fear of the front door being bolted in your face. A voucher gets you a free 24 hour Italian breakfast from the café round the corner and they have a deal with various local restaurants that gives you 10% off the price of a meal. I also met some wonderful people here, the only down side to that being when you wake up to find your drinking buddy/ snogging partner from the previous evening has gone, having left at the crack of dawn for a flight elsewhere. Highly recommended in every way….wonderful.
