Pope John Paul II

05/04/2005
Italian officials are grappling with a logistics and security challenge to thwart terrorist attacks provide food, shelter and medical care that could double the city's population.

A massive campsite is being set up on the outskirts of the city to accommodate pilgrims. Officials are also considering using various sports venues.

If you are in Rome or coming to Rome note the Via della Conciliazione, the large boulevard leading to St. Peter's, is now closed to private traffic. Police patrols have increased, volunteers are directing traffic and ambulances are on standby. There are increased buses and subway runs to cope with the increased useage and plans to set up hundreds of portable toilets around the Vatican.

If you're making your way to Rome without an accommodation reservation it's probably not a great idea right now. If you're a pilgrim feel encouraged to make the journey, but if you're a regular tourist you might like to arrive after the weekend.
