Here are some of the locations from Italy's films:
The Passion of the Christ - the crucifixion scenes were filmed in Matera, in the Basilicata region of Southern Italy. Jerusalem was a single set constructed at Cinecitta Stuidos on the outskirts of Rome.
The Talented Mr Ripley - locations for this film were individually picked and range from New York to Rome to Sicily. The resort of "Mongibello" is fictitious and was filmed on various islands off the coast of Naples and also includes Ischia Ponte. Ischia Ponte is a mile east of Ischia Porto where the Naples ferry docks. Bagno Antonio is the beach were Ripley first meets Dickie. The 'Neapolitan' bar, where Tom and Dickie sing is in Rome, but the opera house is in Naples. The 'Venetian' church is in Palermo.
The Godfather, Cinema Paradiso and Il Postino all used locations in Sicily. The Castello degli Scavi is a common shot in The Godfather. A number of films have used the Tuscan backdrop including A Room with a View (Florence), Much Ado About Nothing(Chianti Valley) and Tea with Mussolini (Florence, San Gimignano). |
