Pompeii provides the richest insight into the lives of the Romans. It was completely buried under a layer of lapilli in AD 79. 2000 of the 20,000 inhabitants are believed to have perished. The city was lost to the public eye largely until 1594 when an architect stumbled upon the ruins. Further excavation was not completed until 1748, and later in 1860. Now most of the ancient city has been uncovered but finds were still made in 2000.
In the 1990s it was listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List but your entry fee will certainly go towards preserving the ruins for future generations. The Ruins incorporate numerous temples, market streets, theatres, the remains of a swimming pool and athletics area mosaics and old houses. |
