LOMBARDY LAKES
Northern Italy is pock marked by a number of lakes where the plains rise into the Alps. These include Lago di Garda, Lago d'Orta, Lago d'Iseo, Lago di Como and Lago Maggiore and a number of other lakes. All are within reach of Milan and centres like Bergamo and Brescia and while they are a bit of a stamping ground for tourists and rich locals there are plenty of spots to escape and enjoy the natural wonders of the lakes and mountains. CINQUE TERRE
These five lands on the Ligurian Coast are well worth a stop and a delightful natural change from northern Italy's medieval cities, museums and even the cypress trees. The five colourful towns perch on ravines that tumble down to the sea. A walking path links the towns and can be traversed in a few hours with regular stops for gelati, to visit the Genovese churches and enjoy some seafood specialities.
