Destination Tip

29/07/2003
The Cinque Terre consists of five townships (Manarola, Riomaggiore, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso) which are perched on steep ravines that slither down to the blue Ligurian Sea below. A walkway along the coast joins the towns and can be easily walked in a day (approximately 5 hours). In each town along the way are quaint churches of Genovese style, fishing markets, gelaterias and restaurants. Between the towns enjoy the views and the myriad of dry wall vineyards above you. For slightly more challenging walks take some of the inland routes that go above the coast through the vineyards. The coastal routes can be closed in bad weather but if it's a sunny winters day it's still enjoyable in the off season. Summer periods can be extremely busy and difficult to find accomodation. Trains are the best way to access the region. If you are coming from central Italy get a train to the coast (perhaps Livorno) and take the route north to one of the five towns. If you are coming from near Genoa in the north or Rome in the south you can take a train line straight up or down the coast. The train line actually stops in each of the towns so if you get tired you can jump on to get back to your accomodation.
