ROME: WHERE TO EAT

Go Back to Rome Summary

The biggest dilemma about eating out in Rome is choosing a restaurant that is not overrun with tourists. Lunch time dining is from 12.30pm to 3pm and from 8pm to 11pm so it's better to arrive early to claim a table, but not too early or you will be eating alone or the restaurant may even be closed.

RESTAURANTS
The best place for budget trattorias are the side streets around Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori.

CAFFES
These are a good fast food option for coffee (see our food guide for more details), panini's (sandwhiches) and other snacks. Most Romans will spend a few moments in a caffe every morning for a quick breakfast of coffee and some kind of pastry. In tourist areas these will be very expensive so try and find a more "local" establishment.

FAST FOOD
Macdonalds and other fast food establishments operate in Italy and in Rome. However there are also some Italian options, try the pizzerias for cheap pizza by the slice and caffes for paninis. There are several cheap pizzeria's near Stazione Termini - Pizzeria L'Economica at Via Tiburtina 44, Alle Carrette at Vicolo delle Carrette 14; near the city centre is Pizzeria Montecarlo at Vicolo Savelli 12.

MARKETS

Trajan's Markets
(Mercarti Traianei) Rome's earliest shopping mall once housed 150 traders. Open: Apr-Sep Tue-Sat 9am-7pm, Sun 9am-1pm; Oct-Mar Tue-Sat 9am-1.30pm, Sun 9am-1pm. Via IV Novembre 94.
Campo de' Fiori
This is a flower and vegetable market held every morning (bar Sunday) at Piazza de' Fiori. There are fruit markets in streets near Stazione Termini every morning.
Supermarkets
Supermarkets in Rome do not tend to be very good for food supplies. Try the markets for fruit and vegetable process. However a supermarket is the place to purchase cheap wine.

BARS
Rome does not have a beer drinking culture but there are a few places to go for a drink. These include Vineria (Campo de Fiori) for wines and beers, Bar della Pace (Via della Pace 3/7), Bevitoria Navona (Piazza Novona 72), Bar San Calisto (Piazza San Calisto, Trastevere), The Druid's Den (Via San Martino ai Monti 28, near Santa Maria Maggiore) for Guiness on tap.
