NAPLES: WHERE TO EAT

Go Back to Naples Summary

Email us with your favourite eating or drinking place - italy@backpackglobe.com
In Napoli people generally eat late so restaurants will probably not open until after 8pm.

SPECIALTY FOOD
Calzone – a puffed up version of a pizza with mozzarella cheese and fresh tomato sauce. The topping actually becomes the filling
Pizzas – pizza’s in Naples are soft and doughy compared to northern Italy’s thin crusts. Look for signs saying la vera pizza napolitana (the real Neapolitan pizza). Pizza’s in Naples must also use mozzarella, olive oil extra virgin and salt from the sea. They must be tossed by hand (no rolling pins) and cooked in a wood-fired oven.
Misto di frittura – pan-fried potato, aubergine (eggplant)and courgette (zucchini) flowers
Carozza – mozzarella in deep-fried bread
Seafood dishes – clams and mussels are a specialty
Sfogliatelle – vaguely sweet ricotta-filled pastry
