ISLE OF ISCHIA: GETTING THERE AND AROUND

Go Back to Ischia Summary

Once you are on Ischia it is easy to move around by taxi, microtaxi, public buses or rental vehicles.

AIR: TO/ FROM THE AIRPORT
Ischia is easily reached from Naples where there is an international airport, Napoli Capodichino.

TRAIN
There are no trains on the Isle of Ischia but you may arrive in Naples by train. For train information go online to http://www.trenitalia.it or telephone 166 10 50 50.

FERRY
Ischia is 20,6 miles from Naples and 12,5 miles from Pozzuoli. These are the best departure places from which to reach the island by hydrofoil or ferry. Ferries and hydrofoils run from two ports in Naples - Beverello and Mergellina.

Taking a traghetto (boat) is slower than a hydrofoil but a little cheaper. It makes the trip in 45 minutes. There are car ferries that also call in at the Island of Procida. These are slower again. Prices for ferries vary from €5-€12 each way, depending on which service you take. Ferries also connect Ischia (more frequently in the high summer season) with other destinations in the Bay of Naples, like Pozzuoli, Capri and Sorrento. Occasional services run further afield like to the island of Ponza.

Ischia has three harbours, Ischia, Casamicciola and Forio. Lacco Ameno and Sant’Angelo shelter only private boats. From the ports you can take various boat tours and trips around the islands or small water taxis.

BUS
There is a good network of public buses on Ischia. In Ischia Porto the bus station is just uphill from the port close to the hydrofoil terminal. You can buy tickets at a kiosk for fixed time periods. A single ticket costs €1.20 for 90 minutes and a two day ticket is €6. Stamp your ticket in the machine onboard at the beginning of your first journey and choose the right bus from those lined up on the road! Number 7 goes from Ischia Porto to Ischia Ponte - a 10 minute journey. The CD and the CS are handy routes that circle the island in opposite directions from Ischia Porto to Sant'Angelo.
